I must admit, I long for a lot of things.
My mom and my daughter and I are doing a Bible study by Jennie Allen entitled Chase. Yesterday we talked about what our heart chases. I had to admit that I don’t always just chase after God. I chase fulfillment, acceptance, approval, friendship. I chase after identity – knowing that I am ok. I chase after my family’s happiness and my to-do list and my responsibilities just like anyone else.
But what it is that I long for most of all?
Ever noticed that when you are extremely thirsty, all you really want is water? Even if you’re not really a water drinker, when that extreme thirst-that-leaves-your-mouth-so-dry-you-can’t swallow comes on, really nothing else will satisfy.
That’s how it is with Jesus. We can long for all these other things, but when we come to the end of ourselves and realize in desperation that we are chasing the wind, one thing remains. Because really, at the heart of it all, our hearts truly thirst for Him. And when we drink deeply of His presence – man, oh, man – there’s nothing like the refreshing, life-giving, quenching that takes place.
“Jesus said, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.'” John 7:37b (NIV)
Are you thirsty?
