“If I were your enemy, I’d devalue your strength and magnify your insecurities until they dominate how you see yourself, disabling and disarming you from fighting back, from being free, from being who God has created you to be. I’d work hard to ensure that you never realize what God has given you so you’ll doubt the power of God within you”–Priscilla Shirer, Fervent (55).
These are the introductory words to “Your Identity: Remembering Who You Are,” Strategy 3 in Priscilla Shirer’s new book, Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer. I’m reading and reviewing one chapter at a time for the next couple of weeks, so I want to share a little tonight from this section on our identity, an area that most women struggle with.
So, if you haven’t read my previous posts, you can catch up here: Introduction, Strategy 1, and Strategy 2. In her book, Shirer opens our eyes to the spiritual battle that we face as women of God. She takes us behind the scenes of life and reveals the enemy’s strategies to make us “passionless, powerless, and prayerless.”
Insecurity is an issue that I have personally struggled with but never really considered it an attack from Satan. I only saw it as a weakness in my own life. But Shirer shares that insecurity is a strategy of the enemy to devalue us and make us weak and ineffective.
“We’ll downplay our real strength. We’ll hate our bodies, highlight our weaknesses, cringe with insecurities, and constantly view ourselves as “less than” by comparison with others. He’ll diffuse our power simply by downplaying our true position” (61).
By sharing Scriptures from Ephesians and an Old Testament story from 2 Kings, Shirer remind us that the remedy for insecurity is truth, and that truth comes from God’s Word. She wraps up this chapter with Scriptures to remind us of our position in Christ and the call to put our faith into action through prayer.
Fervent is a great reminder that many of the struggles we face as women are tactics of a defeated enemy; thus we can draw up our own battle plan with prayer and the Word of God to silence the lies of the enemy and walk in God’s truth.
