“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’
‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'” NIV
Take a few minutes to write down all of the things you are responsible for, whether at home, on your job, or at church. This will probably be a lengthy list!
In a world where we all have so many responsibilities, I think we can all identify with Martha. She loved Jesus, she was hospitable, she was a servant. But at some point in her service, she took her eyes off Jesus and began to look around at who was NOT serving. Martha let her agenda dictate her attention.
Mary, on the other hand, sat at the Lord’s feet. I’m sure she had responsibilities as well, but her focus was fixed on one thing: Jesus. Mary knew the presence of Jesus was the place to be. Because only in His presence do we truly find peace, contentment, security, and confidence. In His presence there is fullness of joy!
Have you taken time to seek His presence today?
