Have you ever thought about the fact that a new song is one that no one has ever sung before? I know that sounds a little simplistic, but when you really think about it, it’s pretty awesome!
A new song is a creative expression of an inner voice, an emotion, a longing, a passion for something.
Moses burst into song after the Israelites were led out of Egypt and through the Red Sea on dry ground. Can you imagine the miracle he had just witnessed?
“I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him” (Exodus 15:1-2, NIV).
Moses could not contain his praise and celebration over all that Yahweh had done. Think of all of his struggles with God, with Pharaoh, and with the Israelites up to that point! Moses was so in awe of all God had done, and as he shared his song, Miriam was inspired to join him in praise. His worship was contagious!
David, too, sang a new song:
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord” (Psalm 40:1-3, NIV).
David cried out to the Lord from the pit of despair, and God heard Him! He lifted him up and settled him down, and David couldn’t help but praise Him. Because David shared his new song, others put their trust in God, too. His worship was a witness!
Several times the Psalmists call forth new songs from the hearts of God’s people.
“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth” (Psalm 96:1, NIV).
“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things…” (Psalm 98:1, NIV).
“Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints” (Psalm 149:1, NIV).
I find it interesting that there are numerous Scriptures about singing songs, and then there are a few that pertain to singing a new song. I think God knows that we love to keep singing the old songs that touch our hearts, but He also knows that sometimes we need a new song. Sometimes we are crying out from the pit and other times we are in awe of His presence in the pit, but regardless, God just brings a new song to our hearts, and it allows us to worship from a new place.
Can you remember the first time you heard a particular song that came at just the right time to express what was in your heart? That’s the power of a new song.
It really doesn’t matter if you are the Moses or the Miriam – a new song on our lips is sometimes just what we need to express the cry of our hearts.
“Shout to the Lord’ is one of those memorable songs for me. I thought you might enjoy the story behind the song. Maybe God will bring a new song to your heart today.
