I love January 1st! What a great opportunity to start afresh, to set new goals, to seek the Lord for the coming year. For the last few years, I have spent the first day in an extended time of praying and seeking God’s direction for the coming year. I have started asking the Lord to give me a Scripture for the year that I could use as my focus throughout the year to guide my thoughts and my direction.
God has often given me a symbol or sign that I would see throughout the year to remind me of that Scripture and my spiritual focus. And every year He has a new Word for me. I love that about God. No matter what this past year has held, God has something new for each of us for the coming year if we will seek Him.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:18-19, NIV).
God created you, He knows you, He loves you, and He desires a relationship with you. The God of the universe will speak to you and lead you and guide you if you will let Him. There is nothing more exciting than to know the Lord and hear His voice. If you do not know Him personally as your Lord and Savior, now is a great time to seek Him. He will take you as you are and make you new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Perhaps you have a relationship with Jesus, but you haven’t spent 2015 seeking the Lord’s presence and direction through a daily quiet time. Now is a great time to start.
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:19-22).
And if you, like me, want to seek God more in your life in 2016, then I encourage you to find a time tomorrow and a quiet place and get alone with the Lord. Get a blank journal, a new devotional, and a new Bible study, and dig into God’s Word. If you are looking for a new Bible study to start your new year, may I recommend Let’s Run! Uncovering Faith and Finding Freedom? It’s a great way to start your year focused on Jesus.
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2).
God has plans and a purpose for you and me in 2016. Let’s seek Him like never before.
