Somewhere between dinner and the divine, between the holiday and the holiness, lies the opportunity to get caught up in the distraction of it all. Christmas is a huge business in America.
From Black Friday to New Year’s Eve, little time is left to ponder the miracle of the manger. We’ve traded the silent night for the sales and fireworks.
Dinner, Distractions, and the Divine
Much like Bethlehem, many of us have left little room for the Baby in the midst of all our hustle and bustle.
“She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7b, NIV84).
But what if we went back this year to the simplicity of the stable? What if we set aside all the decorating and baking and shopping for a few minutes each day and studied the biblical account of Christmas this year?
I mean, really studied it. My small group has decided to do a four-week Bible study for Christmas called Because of Bethlehem by Max Lucado.
The point of this study is to spend the season of Advent–the days leading up to Christmas–preparing our hearts for the season. We are so excited to spend this next month focusing less on the distractions and more on the divine.
Because of Bethlehem is an online study with a weekly video by Max Lucado, a Bible study workbook, and a “Let Your Light Shine” advent tool-kit.
I’m sharing this information with you today because, honestly, I believe that spending more time in God’s Word during the Christmas season is the BEST way to celebrate the season.
Oftentimes we get so busy at Christmas that our time with the Lord takes a backseat. How ironic that when celebrating Christ we sometimes seek Him the least!
So, I invite you to join our small group in an advent season of seeking more of the One we celebrate this year. Let’s get back to the heart of Christmas.
We don’t have to give up the dinners to seek the divine. We don’t have to skip the presents to be in His presence. We only have to be intentional about making our holiday holy.
Whether you choose this study or an advent devotional with your family or just commit to time in the Word every day in December, I pray that you will make more room in your heart for Jesus this Christmas.
